THE SHOW:

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a streamlined theatrical version of Jane Austen’s classic novel involving manners, courtship and relationships. Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, all feelings of attraction are muted by his pride and her prejudice. As their worlds keep colliding, their attraction increases. But they first must overcome their own weaknesses and many other obstacles before the most famous courtship in history can begin.

ROLES TO BE FILLED:

Men:  6-12 / Women:  8-13

NOTE: Listed ages are reflective of the book but not required for casting.  The range in cast number is because some actors may be cast as two or more of the minor roles.

Mr. Bennet – Father to the five Bennet sisters and husband to Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Bennet is sarcastic and quick-witted but stays out of the marriage-related issues of the household while his wife stirs the pot.

Mrs. Bennet – Mother to the five Bennet sisters and wife to Mr. Bennet. Her life’s only goal is to see that her daughters are all married off to wealthier men.

Elizabeth Bennet – Age 20.  As the sharpest of the five Bennet sisters, she is quick-witted and found disagreeable to some of the novel’s other characters because of her sharp tongue. She tends to be prejudiced towards other characters, as shown by her initial reaction to Mr. Darcy, with whom she eventually falls in love. Elizabeth shows how overcoming one’s negative personality traits can lead to a life of fulfillment and happiness.

Jane Bennet – Age 22.  Jane is the eldest of the five Bennet sisters and is described as the most beautiful. She is reserved and pleasant and falls in love with the charming Charles Bingley.

Catherine (Kitty) Bennet – Age 16.  The second youngest of the Bennet sisters. A bit of a whiner, she tends to follow Lydia.

Fitzwilliam Darcy – Age 28.  A wealthy gentleman, the master of Pemberley, and the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Though Darcy is intelligent and honest, his excess of pride causes him to look down on his social inferiors. Over the course of the novel, he tempers his class-consciousness and learns to admire and love Elizabeth for her strong character.

Charles Bingley – Age 22.  Darcy’s considerably wealthy best friend. Bingley’s purchase of Netherfield, an estate near the Bennets, serves as the impetus for the novel. He is a genial, well-intentioned gentleman, whose easygoing nature contrasts with Darcy’s initially discourteous demeanor. He is blissfully uncaring about class differences.

Colonel Fitzwilliam – Darcy's cousin and Georgiana's guardian. He's a model gentleman, though as a second son he lacks any inheritance and so must seek out money through marriage.

Lydia Bennet – Age 15.  The youngest of the Bennet sisters, Lydia is a vain, empty-headed flirt who has never had to deal with the consequences of her actions. She is her mother's favorite.

Georgiana Darcy – Age 16.  Darcy's younger sister. Georgiana is a shy, good-spirited person whom Elizabeth wrongly dislikes until they meet and become friends. Georgiana has her own scandalous history with Wickham.

Mary Bennet – Age 18.  The middle child of the five Bennet sisters. Mary is plain looking and a recluse who enjoys lecturing others about morality, which she learns from books.

Charlotte Lucas – Age 27.  A close friend of Elizabeth's. She weds Mr. Collins for security, not love, but nevertheless finds happiness in her situation.

Sir William Lucas – Charlotte's father, foolishly obsessed with rank.

Mr. Collins – A pompous, generally idiotic clergyman who stands to inherit Mr. Bennet’s property. Mr. Collins’s own social status is nothing to brag about, but he takes great pains to let everyone and anyone know that Lady Catherine de Bourgh serves as his patroness. He is the worst combination of snobbish and obsequious.

Mr. Gardiner – Mrs. Bennet's brother and a successful, warm-hearted, cultivated merchant.

Caroline Bingley – Bingley’s snobbish sister. Miss Bingley bears inordinate disdain for Elizabeth’s middle-class background. Her vain attempts to garner Darcy’s attention cause Darcy to admire Elizabeth’s self-possessed character even more.

Mrs. Gardiner – Mrs. Bennet's sister-in-law. Intelligent and caring, she is the mother that Elizabeth and Jane cannot find in Mrs. Bennet.

George Wickham – A handsome, fortune-hunting militia officer. Wickham’s good looks and charm attract Elizabeth initially, but Darcy’s revelation about Wickham’s disreputable past clues her in to his true nature and simultaneously draws her closer to Darcy.

Lady Catherine De Bourgh – A rich, bossy noblewoman; Mr. Collins’s patron and Darcy’s aunt. Lady Catherine epitomizes class snobbery, especially in her attempts to order the middle-class Elizabeth away from her well-bred nephew.

Other Minor Roles:  Servants / Ball Guests / Housekeeper / Officer
