Alice by Heart

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

All roles are available with a minimum age of 16.  Please prepare a song selection no longer than 2 minutes.  Songs should be from this show or other musical of similar style.  Please provide your own digital accompaniment with no vocal track.  Cold readings will be selected from the script.  Dance / Movement auditions involving moderate to high physical activity to determine range of movement ability and skill.  Wear clothing that does not restrict movement including closed-toed shoes that will allow you to dance. 

THE SHOW:

From the Tony® and Grammy® award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, and co-written by Jessie Nelson (Waitress), Alice by Heart is a touching musical inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice is determined to transport him to Wonderland by re-reading to him the book that has always bonded them, the story that she knows by heart – the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

As they travel through the tale, the lines between Alice’s two worlds begin to blur.  Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This world premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times when the pages must keep turning…

ROLES TO BE FILLED:

Listed ages are reflective of the book but not required for casting. Some roles can be considered without gender preference and all roles are not specific to race.  The range in cast number is because all roles are dual characters and may be determined based on vocal range and movement ability.

Alice Spencer / Alice – Age – 16-23.  Gender – Female.  A young woman, coming of age and full of questions and wonder. Very focused and sure of what she wants, who loves nothing so much in the world as her ailing, near-dying young friend, Alfred.   Vocal range: Top: D5 / Bottom: G3

Alfred Hallam / White Rabbit / March Hare – Age – 16-23.  Gender – Male.  Alice’s closest friend, a young man who introduces her to the book they bond over and who even before the London Blitz, was in poor health and finds himself in quarantine, suffering from tuberculosis.  Vocal range: Top: A4 / Bottom: B2

Red Cross Nurse / Queen of Hearts – Age – Over 25.  Gender – Female.  The nurse in charge of those taking refuge in the London Underground.  A frustrated middle-aged woman unable to achieve professional goals due to her gender.  Cynical and strict.  Vocal range: Top: D5 / Bottom: F#3

Harold Pudding / Mad Hatter – Age – 21-40.  Gender – Male.  Injured in battle, Harold suffers from PTSD and transforms into the Mad Hatter in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: F4 / Bottom: C3

Tabatha / Cheshire Cat – Age – 21-35.  Gender – Female.  Taking refuge in the Underground after losing her family and other children in her care.  Transforms into the Cheshire Cat in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: D5 / Bottom: Bb3

Dodgy / Duchess – Age – young adult.  Gender – Male.  Described as a “dapper whippersnapper” with the Vaudevillian flourish of a grand dame, but mocking his surroundings to console himself for his own losses.  Transforms to the Duchess in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: E4 / Bottom: C3

Clarissa / Mock Mock Mock Turtle – Age – young adult.  Gender – Female.  A privileged young woman, the literal belle of the ball.  Transforms to the Mock Mock Mock Turtle and other characters in Wonderland.  Vocal range:  Top: D5 / Bottom: B3

Nigel / Dormouse – Age – 16-20.  Gender – Male.  A young student who appears broken and scattered, in denial of the situation and that he has lost his entire family in the blitz.  Transforms to the Dormouse in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: Bb4 / Bottom: E3

Angus / Caterpillar 1 – Age – 21-40.  Gender – Male.  Described as roguish with a hookah.  A bad influence, tempting the others.  Transforms to the Caterpillar in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: B4 / Bottom: F3

Dr. Butridge / King Of Hearts / Jabberwocky – Age – Over 25.  Gender – Male.  Charged with taking care of the refugees in the Underground, Dr. Butridge is dominated by the Red Cross Nurse and mumbles medical terms as diagnosis.  Transforms to the King of Hearts and the Jabberwocky in Wonderland.  Vocal range: Top: G4 / Bottom: C3

Caterpillar 2 – Age and gender flexible. In Wonderland, the role of Caterpillar 2 can be cast according to the needs of each production.  Vocal range: Top: C5 / Bottom: Ab3
